Anne N. Murphy, Ph.D.

Anne’s career has been dedicated to the study of mitochondrial dysfunction in the context of human disease and the design of strategies to improve cellular energy metabolism. Prior to joining Cytokinetics, Dr. Murphy was a Professor of Pharmacology at University of California San Diego School of Medicine (2005-2019), where her laboratory focused on characterization of mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction in models of heart failure, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease and immune cell dysfunction. Her laboratory expanded techniques to assess mitochondrial function in high throughput combined with characterization of flux of energy substrates through metabolic pathways. Prior to this academic position, Anne was the Director of Mitochondrial Biology at MitoKor (1998-2004), a San Diego biotech company that focused on drug discovery toward mitochondrial targets.

She began her career as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences where her laboratory focused on mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction in ischemic injury.

Anne obtained her PhD from GWU School of Medicine and Health Sciences, followed by post-doctoral training at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and then at the National Cancer Institute.

Anne enjoys travel with her daughter, entertaining her canine and feline housemates, birding, and gardening.
